New Artisan Small Batch Soaps

Here is a preview of one of the new products I will be debuting at the Eagle Holiday Market on November 19th.

I call this one is “Holy Cross”. It was inspired by the local landmark as well as the Season. Featuring real Frankincense, Myrrh Gum, and GOLDen Honey, with added natural scents of orange, cinnamon, and clove.

I intend for this to be one of my “Signature Soaps”, meaning that it will available year-round and sold in wholesale lots to as many local stores as I can get to carry it. I am not sure yet about the final weight of the bars, since they are still curing, so this label is subject to change, but here is the prototype I designed. I turned one of my photos into digital art for each of my Signature soaps, and I think they turned out quite well. I will unveil “Gore Range” and “Piney Lake” another day.holy-cross-1

Look for more sneak peeks at my Holiday lineup, coming soon!

A Natural Treatment For Cold Sores

Cold Sore

I am taking a moment out of my day to talk about a very unpleasant subject – cold sores. Once you are gifted with the virus that causes them, you never really know when they are going to surprise you, but too much sun OR stress can trigger an outbreak for me. This is January, and one of my roles is bookkeeper – for three different companies – so I guess that explains the stress.

I rarely get cold sores on my lip like this latest one, lucky me, I tend to get them in larger patches anywhere on the lower half of my face (areas where I suffered sun poisoning 34 years ago after moving to Colorado and getting too much spring skiing sun).

I can arrest an outbreak with Abreva, but it is expensive, and I didn’t have any on hand when I woke up on Monday morning with that horrible telltale itchy, burny throbbing. Considering the size of the initial blister, I am pretty sure that treating it naturally has resulted in the best possible outcome, the same outcome I would have had with the OTC ointment.

I made my own blend of essential oils (see the caption in my photo), but you can buy a pre-mix easily enough. I am not going to share the “recipe” or name here because I don’t want to get a cease and desist order from the multi-level marketing oil company that had the nerve to trademark a name that has been around for over 800 years and who sends their lawyers swooping in on any website that uses the name these days.

IT STUNG LIKE YOU WOULDN’T BELIEVE but it was worth it. I used the straight oil blend on a cotton swab, 4-5 times per day.

Now that the blistering is over, along with the threat of spreading, it just needs to heal up. I recommend and am using castor oil now, to keep it moist, prevent infection, and speed the final healing. I have a hotel reservation in just 48 hours (most of my deadlines will be past then, thank goodness), and grand-angels and an indoor swimming pool were a big part of our agenda … I am praying and hoping against hope that it will heal enough before then so I can still join them in the pool… I will let you know how it all turns out, but I do have a lot of faith in the power of castor oil as an aid for healing.

I googled this subject once before and not a lot came up, so I figured the least I could do is share this tip and my experience with it.

Bring on February ~ GO BRONCOS!

Natural Clay Refining Mask

Natural clay is thought to tighten pores, smooth, and soften while drawing out impurities. I often use just a bit of this overnight, anywhere I feel a blemish trying to break out.

USE:  Once per week suggested; typical usage is 6-8 treatments per dry oz.

Add equal amounts of dry mask and desired liquid to a non-reactive mixing vessel; mix until smooth. Use all water for oily skin; Use half water and half oil (jojoba, avocado, almond, grape seed, etc.) for other skin types.

Add liquid slowly and use more or less as needed, just to form a thick, spreadable paste. Apply to skin over face and neck, avoiding immediate eye and brow area. Allow to dry and harden until it cracks – 15 minutes is usually about right. Rinse off gently using warm water; finish up with a light moisturizer.

INGREDIENTS:  Kaolin, Bentonite, Honey, Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) Powder, Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Seed Powder, Beta Vulgris (Beet) Root Powder, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil, Juniperus Virginiana (Cedarwood) Oil, Maltodextrin

Time for a new/old scent to return – but which one?

help Getting ready to produce mass quantities of Hair Dew; seeking your input:

I am going to keep the all natural Bliss scent in the lineup permanently, and I still plan to add an all natural option that will appeal to men as well (maybe sandalwood and cedar or frankincense with touches of orange and just a hint of cinnamon). One day I would like to make a lavender option too. I am also going to keep the universally popular Just Fresh option in the lineup until further notice, since it is my best seller and the one I turn to most often myself.

Hair DewBut I just finished up some of this older citrus basil this morning, and man-oh-man do I miss THAT aroma! But, I am torn. I have some delicious smelling cucumber melon as well, and I really miss having that one on hand in lotion. My Grand-Angel Brandi would vote for cucumber melon, I know, because she used some of my older lotion in that scent last weekend and raved about it.

What to do????  I think that whichever one I go with, I should make it in both shampoo and lotion, and I can’t make both …. If you want to over rule the Grand-Angel, better speak up, I guess, LOL.

Body and Massage Oil

Body and Massage Oil

I rub a little of this into my still-wet skin after every shower for all-over moisturizing that can’t be beat. A mild but pleasant aroma from skin-friendly essential oils is sure to please either sex. Makes a great massage oil and all-over moisturizer. Contains oils that are thought to be helpful to treat scars, cellulite and stretch marks. (My husband actually prefers this product over all others for moisturizing his face.)

Hair Dew feedback

Sold some Hair Dew to a hair stylist friend of mine this week (I didn’t specifically ask her permission to share her name, so I won’t, just yet). Her hair looked okay when I saw her afterward, yesterday, but not as nice as I had expected, so I grilled her and sure enough, she had washed twice because the first wash “didn’t leave her hair feeling clean”. I laughed and told her that I would bet money that it had been clean, but not stripped, and she just wasn’t used to that feeling, but to please trust me and do it just once next time, and then to indulge me even more and let it air dry afterwards.
She called me a little while ago from a friend’s house, who is another local hair stylist. “You should see my hair TODAY!” she starts out, and then says that HE wants some now, how much is it, and can she come pick up a set right now? grin emoticon grin emoticon grin emoticon
Turns out she has beautiful curls … who knew? lol. I just saw them and felt them. More importantly, it seems like she is happy with her curls so maybe she won’t have to be dragging out the hot iron every day any more. Because she has been a hair dresser for almost 40 years, of COURSE she colors her hair, so she will test for us whether it fades her color or not over time, and who better to report on that, right…? grin again. I will of course report back honestly as to how that all goes.

I am grinning like the Cheshire cat here. And I am going into the lab momentarily to make a big batch of the new natually scented line of Hair Dew. I can’t decide what to call it, though, and could use some help. It is soft, and floral, and I might just go with “Soft”… but that seems sort of lazy, or at the least unimaginative. I have a “Just Fresh” scent already that is popular in hair and soap, and am about to release a “Just Clean” scent in Sugar Scrub. What do you think of “Soft”? Soft Summer Breeze was one of my first thoughts, but that seems too wordy… plus I would like to offer it year round. Suggestions welcomed. Hair Dew Just Fresh 😆

Artificial fragrance versus all-natural scent

Natural fragrance is always best. Period – with no ifs, ands, buts,  or other qualifiers. Nevertheless, I still do use regular “fragrance” in some of my products, and I want to make this policy clear.

Fragrance enjoys a special niche in cosmetics in that fragrances are a total mystery as far as their ingredients are concerned. The FDA has decreed that fragrances may be a trade secret, and that means that manufacturers are not required to disclose any of their ingredients. This means that you might be exposed to a “nasty” (such as a paraben) from one of my products when you choose one listing “Fragrance” on the label, without the qualifier of (Natural). I do source my ingredients carefully, but cannot swear absolutely that my artficial fragrances are entirely free of nasty substances, due to that legal loophole.

I offer all-natural fragrance options in almost all products (and am busily working on crafting up-to-my-standard versions of the others) and I encourage you to stick to those, but artificial fragrances are still the most popular, overall, and thus far, they work much better in my hair dew line. At this point, I use them mostly because customers really like fragrance.

If you see the words Fragrance (Natural) on a product label, it means I have used a combination of essential oils or a certified natural blend to achieve the final scent. (Most times I list all the oils used individually, but sometimes space is an issue and instead I use just the single listing.)

If you see the word “Fragrance” on one of my labels without the qualifier of Natural, then the product does contain an artificial scent. Artificial scents should be avoided by persons with compromised health or a sensitivity to fragrance.

It boils down to this, in my mind – if fragrance is the ONLY suspect ingredient used, then your (and my) overall risk is FAR lower than it would be with any traditional product that was purposely preserved with parabens (which is most products) and which probably contains a lot of other nasties, as well.

Part of this journey is about education, and it is a journey for me too, so you can expect to see more and more Re-Dew products offering only natural fragrance as time goes on. It is my sincere hope to transition all of us over to using natural fragrances, exclusively, and to educate as many people as I can about cosmetic (and home product) safety issues along the way.

What is your own stance on artificial fragrance? Did you know about these issues already, or is all of this news to you?

Just wondering …. quiz 1

What is most important to YOU? My own answer would be that I have to balance safety and cost. (And that is why I started making my own in the first place.)

I have no control over the length of the Other field, and it is pretty short, so please consider leaving a reply with any detailed comments. Thanks for your time! 🙂

8 ounces $15

Back in stock by popular demand, and I am really glad, thank you, because I missed having it around myself. 8 ounce tub as shown is $15. The price per ounce has gone down, and it should be easier to dispense from this wide-mouth tub.

Things have been crazy busy for me this year so far, and I have not had a lot of time to craft, but all that changes NOW. I don’t want to spend every January immersed in financial and payroll reports for multiple entities any more (just Re-dew reports!)

I am looking forward to swapping that lid out for a white or perhaps green one, but honestly, it is like this… Until I finish crawling out of the hole of debt that I accrued setting up ‘The Lab’, I am sort of making do when it comes to container colors (haunting clearance sales and snapping up any USA-made bargain containers that I  can use.) When it comes to ingredients, however, I have never and will never cut ANY corners. I like to think that those priorities are also yours, and that you will forgive me the occasional odd color choice during this first year of operations.

Available now in Citrus Basil Scent ~ Coming Next in All Natural Lavender & Lemongrass ~ Coming Soon in ?? Make your wishes heard now!

INGREDIENTS:  Sucrose (Organic  Fair Trade Cane Sugar), Organic Liquid Castile Soap (Water, Potassium Oleate,  Potassium Cocoate, Glycerin, Potassium Citrate, Potassium Palm Kernelate, and Palm Kernal Acid),  Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance

Product Reviews appreciated

I am happy to hear all of your thoughts, and I know that potential buyers would appreciate hearing your honest opinions as well, so thank you in advance.

Reviews posted via FACEBOOK:

My friend, Karen, called to wish me a happy birthday. She asked how my health was. I responded that I’m feeling awesome, but after 7 1/2 years of cancer, I’ve lost my hair 3 times. My hair is now 1 1/2″ long and being a farmers wife it’s taken a toll on both of us. Re-dew Body Products has helped me tremendously! These products are unreal!! I have orange lip balm – I could eat it! Ever since I’ve started using the shampoo and conditioner, I no longer have to deal with an itchy scalp or use hairspray. My hair is silky smooth and smells so good! I use the body lotion all over – no more chapped or dry cracks on my hands. Thank-you friend! I highly recommend Re-dew Body Products!!

LOVE the SprayDew! I carry it everywhere and gave it to several friends for Christmas! Positive response from all! GREAT product!! Thank you for creating such a great line of products!!!!!!
